Job Description:

Under supervision, the Spinal Cord Researcher will support a research lab that studies axon regeneration and spinal cord repair. The Spinal Cord Researcher will perform a limited variety of standard experimental procedures across several distinct areas of expertise, including rodent brain and spinal cord stereotaxic surgery, neural stem cell isolation and grafting, rodent perfusion and tissue dissection, cryostat and microtome sectioning, immunohistochemistry, 3-D confocal and Keyence microscopy and data quantification.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to operate general laboratory equipment including Balance, pH meter, and centrifuge.
  • Demonstrated experience working with lab animals (rodents).
  • Strong skill in accurate record keeping. Ability to organize/analyze/calculate data and produce results in graphic or visual formats.
  • Proven ability in handling and preparation of solutions, chemicals, and drugs. Ability to follow protocols precisely, and ability to troubleshoot protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of experimental and surgical procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of microscopy and imaging techniques.
  • Ability to perform histological procedures such as perfusion, tissue sectioning, staining, and coverslipping, and solution preparation.
  • Theoretical knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, or Neuroscience, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population.
  • Strong time management and strong demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and participate in consultations and discussions regarding procedures, sharing knowledge, and willingness to learn from others.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment, make minor repairs and modify existing equipment and devices.
  • Familiar with the central nervous system and specifically, the spinal cord combined with the ability to perform spinal cord and brain surgeries on rodents. Ability to learn new surgical procedures as needed.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Must be willing to work with virus and hazardous materials.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends as needed to accommodate experiments.
  • Must be willing to work with rodents and other animals, including performing post-operative care and euthanasia.
