Job Description:

Massachusetts General Hospital is one of the leading academic surgical centers in the United States. As we are expanding our activities in robotic surgery across multiple specialties, we are inviting an experienced and motivated Physician Assistant to join our team. The primary responsibility in this position will include surgical first-assistance in robotic surgical cases on services including but not limited to Urology, Gynecology, Colorectal, Thoracic, and General Surgery at MGH. This candidate will be involved in the training of residents, fellows and other PAs to perform the role of bedside surgeon in robotic cases, contribution to a robotic database including intra-, peri-, and postoperative outcomes, and assistance in clinical safety and quality improvement projects.

A competitive candidate will have at least 2 years of operating room experience, with preference for at least 1 year of dedicated robotic surgical experience or completion of an APPAP-accredited PA surgical residency program. Exceptional and motivated new graduates with rotation experience that reflects a dedication to surgery will also be considered.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists in current clinical research and pursues independent clinical research involving robotic surgery and/or surgical outcomes.
  • Educational:
  • Works with Lead Robotic PA and MGH OR leadership to help grow and develop the Robotic Surgery and Robotic PA program.
  • Assists in clinical safety and quality improvement projects.
  • Works closely with OR Nursing to ensure best practices in perioperative patient care.
  • Trains bedside personnel (residents, fellows, other PAs) in robotic procedures.
  • Advocates for and teaches surgical PA/medical students and junior residents rotating through the MGH operating rooms.
  • Assists with ongoing clinical research and quality initiatives as related to robotic surgery through follow-up of patients currently involved in clinical trials or via the robotic quality database.
  • Participates in educational and quality assurance meetings for the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Services to identify areas of performance improvement in patient outcomes, patient experience, medical education.
  • Contributes to robotic database, including intra-, peri-, and postoperative outcomes.

Job Requirements:

  • Eligible for state and federally controlled substances registration.
  • The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.
  • Qualified in all basic and advanced cardiac life support standards as established by the American Heart Association.
  • Possesses the ability to follow complex patient management plans as directed by the attending surgeon.
  • Success in this role is contingent upon the presence of or immediate ability to acquire advanced surgical skills.
  • Excellent teamwork/people skills when dealing with patients and/or colleagues.
  • Diagnose and treat health problems; obtain patient histories, perform comprehensive physical exams, do simple diagnostic tests, prepare a diagnosis and implement treatment procedures for illnesses; and prescribe medications.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Exceptional and motivated new graduates with rotation experience that reflects a dedication to surgery will also be considered.
  • Must be licensed by the State of Massachusetts prior to start date.
  • Must maintain certification by completing required 100 hours of Continuing Medical Education credits every two years, to be sponsored by the institution. Must demonstrate continued competence by passing a re-certification exam every ten years.
  • 2 years of surgical experience desirable (GU, GYN, Colorectal, General Surgery experienced preferred). 1 year of either dedicated robotic surgical experience or completion of an APPAP-accredited PA surgical residency program.
  • 39 hours – Monday-Friday days (3-13 hour shifts).
  • Must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants prior to start date.
  • Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant training program. Bachelors and Masters degrees required.
