Engineering Development Technician II – JPL Careers

Website Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Job Description:

New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That’s our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers—literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. Your mission—your opportunity—is to seek out the answers that bring us one step closer. If you’re driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you’re ready for JPL.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Within the Instruments Division, the Instrument Systems Implementation and Concepts Section, provides the Laboratory with centers of expertise in the formulation and implementation of scientific instruments, cryogenic systems, and airborne/suborbital scientific investigations.
  • This excludes radar-type instruments and instruments for radio science. The expertise in airborne and suborbital investigations is principally intended for those investigations that include deployment of JPL instruments.
  • The Imaging Spectroscopy Group provides end-to-end Imaging Spectroscopy and Contributions to Advanced Instrument Developments. The group develops science questions and hypotheses that can be addressed with high fidelity imaging spectroscopy measurement for Earth and solar system objects.
  • Pursues science and applications research with imaging spectrometer measurements. Advances imaging spectrometer technology to support a broad range of potential future NASA missions.
  • Develops requirements flow for imaging spectrometer instruments including interaction with full range of customers at JPL, NASA and elsewhere.
  • Builds, aligns, and calibrates imaging spectrometers for a range of objectives in concert with other JPL groups. Invents, tests and implements new algorithms for extraction of information from imaging spectroscopy measurements.
  • Operates advanced JPL airborne imaging spectrometers for NASA designated acquisitions and campaigns.
  • Calibrates imaging spectrometer data and delivers calibrated measurements and higher level products to NASA designated investigators. Supports JPL with range of new instrument developments and proposals that involve measurement of light as well as other forms of spectrometers.

Job Requirements:

  • Performs moderately complex technical functions related to the setup, test, monitoring, repair and/or modification of mechanical, electronic or electro-mechanical systems, environmental systems, experimental design circuitry, prototype models or specialized test equipment.
  • Works from documentation, including diagrams, notes, prints, or layouts, which requires minimal interpretation, to perform technical support tasks.
  • Performs limited design activities in support of equipment/facilities/procedures development.
  • Monitors lab environment conditions and reports anomalies to cleanroom engineer.
  • Support airborne operations of imaging spectrometer instruments and support development of space imaging spectrometer instruments.
  • Conduct and document engineering technician activities on a variety of technical tasks related to imaging spectrometer instruments such as assembly, disassembly, fabrication, test, calibration, measurement, maintenance, repair and modification of mechanical and electromechanical systems (including prototype, engineering model, and flight), cabling and components, ground support equipment, specialized test equipment, modification, maintenance and certification of laboratory facilities and equipment
  • Uses detailed knowledge of electronic or mechanical fabrication and assembly to fabricate and assemble moderately complex mechanical, electronic or electro-mechanical systems, devices, fixtures, parts, or equipment.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Knowledge of basic computer skills such as e-mail, Microsoft word, and Excel
  • Experience with airborne instruments that operate on aircraft of the type used by NASA
  • Extensive aerospace industry experience and/or FAA avionics certification
  • Experience and/or certifications for handling space flight hardware
  • Experience micro assembly equipment and techniques including die-attach, wire bonding and wire pull testing
  • Experience with software for controlling electronic systems such as Lab View, matlab, or Python
  • Knowledge of mechanical computer aided design (CAD) programs
  • Typically requires a High School diploma with a minimum of 6 years of related experience; Associates degree with a minimum of 1 year of related experience; related required training
  • Experience with electronic test equipment including volt meters and oscilloscopes
  • Experience gathering and analyzing test data
  • Experience reading electronic drawings
  • Experience with electronic PCB assembly techniques
  • Experience testing circuit boards
